Strictly speaking, Giclee is the process of using digital technology to make fine art prints using an inkjet printer. The term was coined by Jack Duganne in 1991 to distance the fine art prints being produced at the time from the Iris print technology that used inkjet to produce proofs for prepress. As we’ve moved away from Iris printers, the name has come to describe fine art prints typically shown in galleries or sold as limited editions. The word ‘Giclee’ is a derivative of the french word ‘Le Gicleur’ which means nozzle.

Interestingly Graham Nash, the musician (and ex-boyfriend of Joni Mitchell) was a leading figure in the advancement of inkjet printing, first using an Iris printer for his own photographic work, and then opening his own fine art printing business, Nash Editions.
